PosNederland heeft een rijke geschiedenis in het gebruik van de ondergrond voor de winning van grondwater, fossiele brandstoffen, zouten, kalksteen en – in beperkte mate – ertsen. Terwijl de maatschappij vroeger weinig vragen stelde over het nut en de noodzaak van deze winning van delfstoffen, moeten bedrijven opererend in deze sector nu steeds vaker verantwoorden ‘wat er gebeurt’ in de Nederlandse ondergrond. De maatschappelijke discussies over de productie van het Groningse gas, en activiteiten zoals de opslag van CO2 en proefboringen naar schaliegas zijn hier voorbeelden van.

Het belang van de dialoog tussen overheden, burgers, bedrijven en maatschappelijke organisaties heeft geleid tot recente veranderingen in de Mijnbouwwet en het opstellen van de Structuurvisie Ondergrond (STRONG). Met de toenemende vraag naar energie en de afnemende reserves, is de vraag naar innovatieve technieken in de ondergrond groter dan ooit. Terwijl de industrie poogt de CO2-voetafdruk te beperken, neemt de concurrentie voor het gebruik van de ondergrond toe en klinkt de roep om het behoud van onze leefomgeving steeds luider. Onder invloed van deze ontwikkelingen zien we nieuwe toepassingen ontstaan zoals diepe en ultra-diepe aardwarmte (t.b.v. elektriciteits- en stoomproductie) en opslag van andere vormen van energie, stikstof en lucht.

Het KNGMG Lustrumsymposium ter gelegenheid van ons 105-jarig bestaan belicht de kansen en uitdagingen van deze toepassingen van verschillende kanten en stelt daarbij de rol van de aardwetenschapper centraal.

Plenary as well as break-out group discussions will circle the theme “Your Future in Geosciences” and help you to get to know your peers and your professional future in this exciting field.
