Postpone: PGK YP event: Geological wine tasting

wo 01-04, 17:0019:00

Dear YP PGK member,

In view of the recent developments regarding Covid-19 in the Netherlands, the PGK will delay the planned geological wine tasting event till a later date this year.

—————————

Our host will be Geert-Jan Vis (TNO) on the topic “New ventures: Win from dutch soil”

Program: 17:00 onward

Abstract:
Wine from Dutch soil may sound like a risky enterprise to some. However, during the past ten years winegrowing has seen an enormous growth in the Netherlands. Vineyards can be found in all provinces and Dutch wines win prizes in respectable international competitions. To a geologist aware of the variability of Dutch geology, this raises the question whether there is a relationship between soil and wine as often suggested. Does wine from a Johanniter-grape grown in loess in the south taste different from wine from the same grape grown in fluvial clay in the east of the country? In the framework of the International Year of Soils, TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands made a study of this topic. What are the common thoughts and what is the scientific perspective? Can we really taste flint stone in a glass of wine?
