On September 7th the KNGMG hosts a symposium on current dilemmas in Earth Sciences. You can register below.

Earth science expertise is essential to many of the key challenges facing society today, such as the energy transition, the sustainable use of earth resources, and the fair and balanced use of the North Sea. These challenges first and foremost require deep and broad technical expertise. But while working on these challenges, earth scientists also face broader questions and moral dilemmas. How can we best support the energy transition? Is there a role for oil and gas companies? What is the role of academia? Where should we source metals and minerals to ensure that green technologies are beneficial for both people and planet? Which users of the North Sea should get priority over other users?

This symposium will explore dilemmas facing earth scientists in the Netherlands. Lingli Zhou (VU Amsterdam, who replaces Mike Buxton from the TU Delft) will discuss dilemmas around the mining of essential minerals and metals. Tommer Vermaas (Deltares) will discuss dilemmas surrounding the use of the North Sea. Finally, Barthold Schroot from EBN will discuss dilemmas around the energy transition in the Netherlands. There will be plenty of room for debate, both plenary and during the closing drinks.

Location and transport
The meeting will be held at TNO-Geological Survey of The Netherlands, Princetonlaan 6, Utrecht. This is in the Utrecht Science Park, see here for information about accessibility.
