Mijnexcursie Sedimentologische Kring

On Friday 30th of September the Sedimentologische Kring will visit the opencast lignite mine of Garzweiler (Germany).

In a 4WD bus of the mine, we can see many nice outcrops that show (part of) the Neogene evolution of the Lower Rhine Basin. It will also be a great opportunity to discuss the depositional environments and sequence stratigraphy of this area. The excursion will be led by Torsten Utescher and Linda Prinz of the University of Bonn and Peter Lokay from RWE.
Registration can be done by sending an email to sedi.kring@gmail.com (subject: Registration Garzweiler Excursion). Please indicate if you would like to join for dinner after the quarry visit.
Maximum 21 participants
Costs: Free for members (Membership of the Sedimentological Society is 10,- per year).

The quarry visit is approximately from 13:00 – 16:00h. Garzweiler is about 2-hours from Utrecht. We can arrange a diner (at your own expense) after the quarry visit when there is enough interest.
You have to arrange your own transportation. In the week before the excursion, we will distribute a participants list for people who would like to carpool.

Hotel suggestion: If you like to stay one night after the excursion you can consider to book a local hotel (please indicate when you are interested, we will send you some suggestions for this).
In case you have more questions don’t hesitate to send an e-mail and feel free to forward the invitation to other interested people.
