Abstract:

In the afternoon of January 12th 2010, the region around Port-au-Prince in Haiti was struck by an Mw 7.0 earthquake resulting in widespread destruction and fatalities. The event occurred on a satellite fault along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone (EPGFZ), which is a plate-bounding fault situated in the geologically complex northern Caribbean region. Studies into this fault system conducted in the direct aftermath of the earthquake resulted in more questions than answers. In this talk I will present the results from a series of field campaigns conducted in southern Haiti, and our endeavors to understand the geological evolution of this hazardous and curious fault system
