KNGMG Staringlezing en symposium: From back-arc basin to mineral deposits
Op 17 januari 2024 wordt de Staringlezing gegeven door opkomend aardwetenschappelijk talent Anouk Beniest, de winnaar van de Vening Meinesz prijs in 2022. Anouks specialiteit is back-arc basins, geologische bekkens op de oceaanbodem, die ontstaan daar waar een tektonische plaat onder een andere tektonische plaat schuift, een gebied met een hoog risico op bijvoorbeeld aardbevingen en onderzeese landverschuivingen. Back-arc basins zijn ook een van de mogelijke targets voor onderzeese winning van mineralen, met name mineralen die broodnodig zijn voor de energietransitie. Deze cross-over van onderwerpen staat hoog op de agenda in binnen- en buitenland, en hangt samen met de grote uitdagingen binnen de hedendaagse geologie: is het mogelijk om de grondstoffen, benodigd om onze maatschappij te verduurzamen, duurzaam te winnen? Dus het symposium dat samenhangt met deze editie van de Staringlezing heeft als titel: From back-arc basin to mineral deposits.
At 17 January 2024 a Staring lecture will be given by earth science talent Anouk Beniest, the winner of the Vening Meinesz prize in 2022. Anouk’s specialty is back-arc basins, i.e. locations on the ocean floor where a tectonic plate slides under another tectonic plate, with high seismic and tsunami-risk. Back-arc basins are also one of the possible targets for marine mineral recovery, especially minerals that are needed for the energy transition. This crossover of topics is high on the national and international agenda, and is related to one of the major conundrums in contemporary geology: is it possible to sustainably extract the raw materials required to make our society more sustainable? So the symposium associated with this edition of the Staring lecture is entitled: From back-arc basin to mineral deposits.
